How many hours may I work under CPT? What is Part-time CPT vs Full-time CPT?

The employer will decide the hours. It may vary from week to week and it may include overtime at the employer’s discretion. There is no upper limit, but we advise students not to overextend themselves, especially if continuing with academic courses.

20 hours or less per week is considered part-time CPT, and 21 or more is full-time CPT.  If this changes part way through the internship, you must request an updated I-20 before changing to the new hours. Send a PT to FT or FT to PT change request to [email protected]

F1 students should keep track of the hours worked and monitor the number of days they have worked on CPT.  (Full-time CPT calculator on https://ic.utdallas.edu/isso/cpt/ )

If you plan to work FT CPT, please check out "reduced enrollment" on ISSO's website https://www.utdallas.edu/ic/isso/enroll-reduced/ and contact ISSO with questions.
